PETER McGAURAN MP Commonwealth Minister for Science

Media Release

9 JULY 2003

The ABC’s online science gateway celebrated its 6th birthday today. "The Lab" which began in 1997 delivers scientific information in an accessible, fun way to young Australians.

"The Lab" has special sections dedicated to the environment, space and nature. Here you can discover that opposites don’t attract, karaoke is bad for you and cannibal bacteria eat their siblings.

Federal Science Minister Peter McGauran attended the celebration and congratulated everyone involved in "The Lab", particularly those who work behind the scenes.

"Everyone who works on this award winning website has much to be proud of," Mr McGauran said.

"In its first year of operation "The Lab" was declared multimedia/online producer of the year and the following year was listed among the top 40 websites in the world.

"In 1999 "The Lab" won both the Australian Internet Award for Best Science and Technology site and the Australian Interactive Media Association Award for Best Science Site. It’s no wonder this site attracts almost 1.5 million hits every week," Mr McGauran added.

"The Lab" also hosts online forums on diverse topics like time travel and wormholes. It is also a valuable educational resource for science teachers.

"In addition to the extraordinary quality and quantity of content of "The Lab", the website is bright and user friendly.

"Happy 6th birthday to "The Lab," Mr McGauran concluded.
