Celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week September 1-7

“School students across Murray will join with others around Australia to celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week, Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone said today.

“This is the tenth year of National Literacy and Numeracy Week with the theme Partnerships in Learning'. It aims to highlight the importance of parents, teachers and members of the community supporting young people in developing strong literacy and numeracy skills. The week also celebrates the outstanding results achieved by many young Australians with the Presentation of Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards on Friday 5th September.

“Literacy and numeracy skills are the building blocks which lead to greater learning later in life. It is important that all of us work together, not only this week, but every week in encouraging the development of these skills with our children,” Sharman Stone said.

“I encourage parents and grandparents and older brothers and sisters to make a special effort to participate in activities with young people during this week, whether it is National Reading Day on Wednesday 3rd September or spending time at home talking about books

and numbers.
