Schools First a welcome new initiative

The Shadow Education Minister Christopher Pyne today welcomed news of the planned $5 million announcement of the National Australia Bank’s new Education program - Schools First.

This new initiative will endeavour to foster stronger partnerships between schools and local communities.

“A school with close community ties has multitudinous benefits, whether it be in employment, training, access to local business networks to name but a few,” Mr Pyne said.

The Schools First program will reward outstanding examples of local community/schools networking specifically aimed at improved learning for young people.

Other organisations involved include Australia Cares, the Foundation for Young Australians, and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

“I think it’s a terrific idea, and when the Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, announces it tomorrow, I’ll be leading the applause,” Mr Pyne said.
