Thu, 21st February 2008 LABOR REFUSES TO RULE OUT CHANGES TO TAX FREE SUPER

Michael Keenan MP Shadow Assistant Treasurer, Superannuation and Corporate Governance

In Question Time today, the Treasurer once again refused to stand by Labor's pre-election commitment to keep the taxation arrangements for superannuation.

Labor promised Australians prior to the last election that they would not change the taxation treatment of superannuation.

Today, the Treasurer refused to stand by that commitment.

Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Governance, Michael Keenan MP said the Labor Government was going down a path that would be extraordinarily detrimental to millions of Australians relying on tax-free superannuation payouts.

He said: ''I am deeply concerned the Government is softening up Australians to change these arrangements - and Australians will be rightfully angry if it does, because Labor categorically ruled out any changes prior to the last election.

''Today, in Question Time, the Treasurer once again refused to stand by that commitment.''

Mr Keenan said statements by Labor ministers prior to the election showed a marked contrast to what they were saying now.

Prior to the election, Treasurer Wayne Swan on Channel 7's Sunrise on 19 November 2007, said in relation to superannuation: ''I absolutely guarantee there will be no changes at all.''

Today, he refused to stand by that commitment.
