Defence Minister Dr Brendan Nelson was in Townsville today for the second time in just four days, to welcome home the Townsville based soldiers from 1st Battalion after a six month deployment to Iraq. “I was pleased the Defence Minister and I were able to welcome home our local troops today from their deployment to Iraq as part of Operation Catalyst,” Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, said. “Our soldiers from the Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) have been based in Baghdad for the past six months and have been crucial to the success of the Security Detachment,” Mr Lindsay said. “A number of Royal Australian Air Force personnel also returned from various duties in Iraq,” he said. The Security Detachment was tasked to provide protection and escort for Australian Government personnel working in the Australian Embassy.
