DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENT - DR BRENDAN NELSON

The Hon Julie Bishop MP

Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs

Deputy Leader of the Opposition

The Coalition welcomes the appointment of Dr Brendan Nelson as Australia’s next Ambassador to the European

Communities, Belgium and Luxembourg, Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and

Special Representative to the World Health Organization, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop said

today.

Ms Bishop said Dr Nelson is ideally suited to this role.

“As a former doctor, Howard government minister and Opposition leader, Brendan is well qualified to represent

Australia at the highest levels in these important international institutions,” she said.

“He is a person of great intellect and integrity and I have no doubt he will excel in this role.

“In particular, his experience as Minister for Defence will stand him in good stead in relation to Australia’s military

involvement in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led mission to that nation.”

Ms Bishop said she is delighted that Dr Nelson will continue his public service on behalf of the people of

Australia.

“Brendan brought great passion to his work in parliament and was successful in driving a range of important

reforms in the education and defence portfolios in the Howard Government,” she said.

“I congratulate Brendan and wish him every success in this new and exciting chapter of his life.

“Brendan and his wife Gillian will be outstanding representatives of our nation and they will leave our shores with

the best wishes of the Australian people.”
