OUTSTANDING SUCCESSES IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT

"One position saves a lot of energy" - that's the message in a booklet outlining the achievements of the winners and finalists from the 1986 National Energy Management Awards. The booklet, which was released today by the Department of Resources and Energy, highlights the importance of the position of Energy Manager - one which has saved many organisations thousands of dollars each year through the introduction of an effective

energy management program.

One of the winners, RMS Development Engineers Pty Ltd, provided samples of projects costing $109 000 and yielding annual . savings of $137 000. These works included the installation of computerised energy management systems, conversion of plant from oil to electricity and changeovers to high efficiency lighting. ยท

A special award of Energy Manager of the Year was jointly sponsored by the Australian Institute of Energy and the Department of Resources and Energy.

Energy Manager of the Year in 1986 was Wolf Servatius, Chief Engineer at the South Burnett Meatworks Co-operative Association Ltd. With the support of senior management, he established an energy management program covering changes to

engineering systems and operating procedures. Energy use per tonne of dressed meat fell by a hefty 26 percent, recovering the program's cost in 18 months.

Other award winners and finalists demonstrated equally dramatic savings in energy costs.

Nominations for the 1987 Awards are invited from organisations, large or small, in both private and public enterprise. Categories this year are Architecture, Buildings, Energy Management Services, Industry, Energy Saving Products, Public

Institutions, Small Business, Transport, Commonwealth Energy Management and Export. Again an award will be made for the __ Energy Manager of the Year. Nomination forms are available :>I from the Commonwealth Department of Resources and Energy.

Copies of the booklet "One position saves a lot of energy" are available free from the Commonwealth Department of Resources and Energy and State Energy Departments and Offices.
