MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR TONY MESSNER

SHADOW MINISTER FOR FINANCE AND TAXATION 41/87

TH E SENATE EMBARGO 9.00AM EST 22/3/87

SMALL BUSINESS AND FAMILIES LOSE UNDER HAWKE GOVERNMENT

"Small businesses and families have been particular losers under the Hawke Labor Government"

Shadow Minister for Finance and Taxation, Senator Tony Messner, said today that the policies adopted by the Hawke Government are having a disastrous effect on business investment and the standards of living of ordinary Australian families.

Senator Messner was addressing a meeting in Brisbane of business people, members of the Liberal Party and other concerned Australians who are desperate for a credible, clear and positive political alternative.

"The Hawke Labor Government has tried, and failed miserably, in its management of the Australian economy."

"By any rational and objective assessment, its economic record is appalling."

Senator Messner"said that the Hawke/Keating/Walsh trio has combined to produce the highest interest rate structure since the Great Depression.

"In particular, the small overdraft rate, which is the prime concern of the small business sector, is currently 20.5 per cent, surely a disincentive for any small business enterprise to invest in new capacity."

"Moreover, the current high interest rate structure is also having a savaging effect on the standards of living of ordinary Australians, especially families."

Senator Messner said that because of the record high home loan interest rate, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the average family to afford a home.

"Up until a few years ago, Australian families perceived they had a right to own a home and backyard."

"Today, sadly enough, this has all but become a dream."

Senator Messner said that a return to fiscal and economic responsibility can only be achieved by the return of a Howard led Government.

"The people of Australia are demanding rational, practical, and above all, credible policy alternatives."

"However, the policies of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen do not meet this criteria."

"His policies are unworkable, would involve greater Government power and regulation and would impose a greater tax burden on the majority of Australian's"

"Clearly, Australian standards of living would be gravely threatened if his rhetoric were acted upon."

"Only a Howard led Government can return this country along the road to economic recovery."

"The vision of the Liberal Party for 1987 and beyond is a return to incentive - incentives for families and incentives for the small business sector."

"We will implement policies, primarily through the taxation and social security systems, to allow families the financial freedom and security to enjoy a prosperous and increasing standard of living." .

"Further, we will provide the economic climate in which the small business sector can display the dynamism and enterprise which has been stifled by the policies of the Labor Government for far too long."
