TRANSCRIPT OF DOORSTOP INTERVIEW JOHN HEWSON MP RADIO 2UE - ST GEORGE RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB

E & Ο E - PROOF COPY ONLY

SUBJECTS: Grand Final; Olympics/Republic

JRNLST:

Dr Hewson, a quick preview of today. How do you see it going?

HEWSON:

I think it will be a good game. I think St George is ready this year. They weren't ready last year, we lost pretty badly, but this year we'll win. Ϊ think we're better disciplined and more professional and we've now got a well rounded team. Not a team of stars, but a star team.

JRNLST:

Just on one other matter. The Prime Minister this morning says that the 2000 Games should be opened by the new President of the Republic. What's you're response to that?

HEWSON:

Look, I think he's doing the wrong thing to mix these issues. I dont think the people of Australia link the Olympic Games with his push for a republic. The republic issue will be decided by the people of Australia in due course. But as far as I can see the Prime Minister ought to just focus on what we all feel, that is, it's great to see Australia win something like this and it's about time we all started to believe in ourselves and

see that we can actually be the best in the world.
