The. Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General M.F. Brogan,

will leave on Sunday for Vietnam to thank and farewell the last infantry · ·

elements of the Australian Army, who are shortly to return home..

General Brogan will have discussions with Australian officers

concerning the formation of the Headquarters of the Australian Army Assistance

Group. This headquarters will.command the Australian instructors and advisers

remaining in Vietnam after completion of the withdrawal of the Australian Force


The Assistance Group will not have a combatant role. It will be

commanded by Brigadier I.A. Geddes, who, after the departure of the Australian

Force Commander, Major-General D.B. Dunstan, will be the senior Australian

officer in Vietnam. . .

General Brogan will watch training by Australians of Vietnamese .

and Cambodian troops in Vietnam. .

He will also have discussions in Saigon with senior Vietnamese

officials and military officers.

On his way back to Australia he will make his first official visit to

the ANZUK Force in Singapore, and will inspect Australian units during training.
