EMBARGO FOR 7.00 PM - 13.03.89 CHARLES BLUNT, MP FEDERAL NATIONAL PARTY MEMBER FOR RICHMOND SHADOW MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND AVIATION

COUNTRY COMMUNITIES FACE LOSS OF SERVICES - LOSS OF AIRPORTS

"Labor's politically motivated opposition to a third runway at Sydney's airport has already resulted in measures to exclude smaller aircraft. This policy will continue unless something is done, and country commuters will suffer.

"The current policy is based on aircraft weight. The next move could restrict "approach speeds".

This was said by National Party Frontbencher Charles Blunt. Mr Blunt is Shadow Minister for Transport and Aviation. He was addressing a meeting of the Lismore Branch of the National Party.

"Country centres served by small aircraft are looking at loosing their air links with Sydney," Mr Blunt said.

"This would be an economic disaster. It would isolate communities, cut services, increase costs, and limit business growth and investment.

"Convenient air travel is the key to growth - especially for tourism.

"The current weight limits will inevitably rise to restrict larger and larger aircraft. Eventually the Fokkers, F27's and F28's will be affected, unless something is done.

"Labor has watched the problem grow for 6 years. They must immediately build a third runway and proceed to develop a second airport", Mr Blunt concluded.
