DEPUTY LEADER of the OPPOSITION PRESS RELEASE SHADOW TREASURER

BRACKET CREEP HYPOCRISY OF GOVERNMENT

Treasurer Dawkins fell flat on his face today on the question of bracket creep.

Mr Dawkins blithely included in his speech on Treasury Freedom of Information papers that:

"Tax bracket creep describes the increase in the tax burden caused when the tax scale is not adjusted for the effects of inflation. Accordingly, unless the tax scale is adjusted, higher nominal wage levels push taxpayers into higher average tax rates."

But neither Mr Dawkins nor Mr Keating have any intention of returning bracket creep. All you have to do is look at the "One Nation/One Job" statement of last Wednesday to know that.

But don't take the Coalition's word for it. Here is what Senator Button said in Senate Question Time today:

"... does this put back all that - anything lost by bracket creep over the years to the taxpayer as distinct from every other government in the history of this (inaudible) - no, no it doesn't, no it doesn't, no it doesn't"

The hypocrisy of the ALP Government has no bounds!
