In his Press Conference today the acting Shadow Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Mr Bill Taylor, HP, Federal Member for Groom responded to the Ministerial statement on the structural review of the higher Australian Defence Force staff arrangements, undertaken by Major General Sanderson.

Mr Taylor welcomed the Minister's positive reactions to the Sanderson proposals which reflect the urging of the Liberal and National Parties for many months. The report goes some way to redressing the over emphasis of procurement at the expense of personnel.

Reduction of the duplication within the Services by enhancing the Chief of the Defence Force's management role is strongly supported, as is devolution from Canberra.

Mr Taylor hoped that financial savings could result which would be directed to enhancing the conditions of senior officers and other personnel within Defence.

Unfortunately, the detail of redundancy packages for the military was not available nor was there a clear assessment of the efficiency burden that the civilian bureaucracy were to bear. These issues are obviously of great concern to the Opposition because they could impact upon Defence Force morale.

In summary, Mr Taylor, on behalf of the Shadow Minister for Defence Science and personnel agreed with the broad thrust of the Sanderson recommendations, however, further comment regarding how the moves will affect the civilian side of the equation and how the redundancy packages will fit in with existing or proposed wage fixation guidelines cannot be made until the actual Report becomes available in about a month's time.
