PRESS STATEMENT
With the compliments of the Hon. V.J. Bird, M.L.A., Minister for Education.

The Minister for Education (Mr. Bird) announced today that the Education
Department would soon begin to recruit unemployed teachers to replace,
~;here necessary, teachers who had resigned or retired, and to maintain
the approved staffing scale.
Mr. Bird said. this followed rationalisation of the DepaTtment 's staffing
position sine~ the beginning of the school year.
Mr. I>ird said that a continuing 1-eview of the number of teachers employed
had indicated that the Department was now back within its budgetary
limits for employmen t of teachers.
"As I said in my budget speech, for a variety iOf reasons it had not been
previously possible to replace all teachers who left the service during a scho~l year.
nr further said that fTom the beginning of 1979 lt wa s planned to replace .....
resigning or retiring teachers wherever practicable.
"This is now being done", Mr. Bird said.
He said that Regional Education Offices will consider those applications
which have been lodged by unemployed teachers.
