Supporting International Flights at Avalon Airport

Chris Bowen,Darren Cheeseman,Richard Marles posted Wednesday, 11 August 2010

The Gillard Labor Government supports Avalon Airport’s plan to become an international airport and will work with the Airport to develop its plans for an international terminal.

Federal Minister Financial Services, Chris Bowen, made the announcement at Avalon Airport today with Federal Labor Member for Corio, Richard Marles and Labor Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman.

“Avalon has the potential to become an international aviation hub for the Greater Geelong region, the Surf Coast and beyond,” Chris Bowen said.

“This is about supporting industry and local businesses to seek international markets as well as bringing more visitors to the Geelong region.

“The Federal Labor Government has recently negotiated international air service agreements that potentially provide opportunities for regional hubs like Avalon to attract international services from growing markets such as Indonesia and Malaysia.

“The Government’s Aviation Policy White Paper made clear our support for growing international air services to support trade, tourism and jobs in regional communities.”

Richard Marles and Darren Cheeseman welcomed the announcement at Avalon Airport today.

“The Airport is at the heart of Geelong’s transport industry future, and is our region’s most important job growth prospect,” Richard Marles said.

“Having Greater Melbourne’s second airport based in Geelong is a huge asset for long-term jobs, tourism and investment in our region.”

Airline services to Avalon Airport are expanding, with Jetstar’s current domestic services to Avalon soon to be joined by Tiger Airways services in November 2010.

“Increasing services to Avalon Airport is a shot in the arm for tourism on the Surf Coast and the Great Ocean Road,” Darren Cheeseman said.

Development on the airport site will be funded by Avalon Airport.
