STEVEDORING INDUSTRY LEVY TO CEASE

Federal Industrial Relations Minister, Laurie Brereton, will recommend to the Governor-General the suspension from 1 September 1995 of the Stevedoring Industry Levy which has been used to fund redundancy payments resulting from the waterfront reform program.

Mr Brereton said that sufficient levy had been collected to enable the Stevedoring Industry Finance Committee (SIFC) to discharge the balance of the $130 million Australian Industry Corporation (AIDC) loan taken out to fund the employer contribution to the redundancy payments.

“Removal of the levy of up to $1.25 per tonne should lead to a reduction in stevedoring and shipping charges,” Mr Brereton said.

The SFFC was obliged to repay the loan which was established through the Australian Industry Development Corporation to fund the major employer contribution to redundancy payments resulting from the waterfront reform program.

“The waterfront reform program has been a huge success. The Bureau of Transport and Communications Economics analysis of the Waterfront Industry Reform Authority (WTRA) program has found that it generated savings of over $200 million in 1993 alone for Australian industry,” Mr Brereton said.

“Ship turnaround time has fallen 55% since 1989 and during that period waterfront productivity has increased 48.5% with double the number of containers being handled.” '
