Media Release The Hon David Hawker MP Speaker of the House of Representatives Federal Member for Wannon

8 June 2005

Applications are being sought for Australia’s prestigious postgraduate General Sir John Monash Awards for study at the world’s best universities.

Member for Wannon, David Hawker, is encouraging Western Victorians to apply for what he describes as “one of our nation’s most sought after scholarships”.

“The General Sir John Monash Foundation comprises current and past leaders from academia, business and the community who have come together to select and support the development of future leaders of their fields and of the community,” Mr Hawker said.

“Annually, up to eight Awards go to outstanding Australian citizens graduating from Australian Universities to enable them to undertake postgraduate study abroad at the world’s best Universities. Scholars receive $150,000 over three years to complete their Masters or PhD.”

The General Sir John Monash Awards are not limited by age, gender, and academic field of study, country or university, subject to the university being considered to be amongst the global leaders in the chosen field of study.

Whilst no upper age limit is stipulated, Awards will generally favour those whose major contribution to their field and to the community lies ahead of them.

“These are Australia’s own prestigious Awards for postgraduate study, helping to develop tomorrow’s leaders,” Mr Hawker said.

“It would be great to have a young Western Victorian amongst them.”

Application forms for 2006 Awards are available on the Foundation’s website at
