Outstanding Response to Trade Training Centres in Schools Program

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, has today welcomed the positive response to Round One (Phase

Two) of the Trade Training Centres in Schools Program, with a total of 136 applications received from schools

around the country.

These applications represent 417 schools with total bids worth over $385 million, illustrating the outstanding

response to the Trade Training Centres in Schools Program since it was launched in February 2008.

The $2.5 billion Trade Training Centres in Schools Program is an important part of the Australian

Government’s Education Revolution.

Trade Training Centres are being established to help increase the number of students achieving Year 12 or an

equivalent qualification and help address skill shortages in traditional trades and emerging industries.

The Commonwealth and State and Territory Government and non-government Education Authorities are

working closely to provide better opportunities for secondary students across Australia.

The program will provide $2.5 billion over 10 years to enable all secondary schools to apply for funding of

between $500 000 and $1.5 million each.

The Australian Government has allocated $90 million in funding for Phase One, while around $310 million is

available for Phase Two. The funding can be used to construct new, or upgrade, existing trade or vocational

education and training facilities.

The Australian Government is working towards achieving a national target of increasing the proportion of

students achieving Year 12 or an equivalent qualification to 85 per cent by 2015 and 90 per cent by 2020.

Expressions of Interest for Round Two are now open (From 31 October 2008) and close in December 2008.

Decisions on Round One (Phase Two) will be announced in early 2009.
