Patterson confirms - no solution to aged care funding crisis in the near future

When asked in the Senate today what immediate action the Government will take to

address the aged care funding crisis, Minister Kay Patterson said:

“There will always be enormous demands on nursing homes. The

Minister has put in place an inquiry to look at funding and funding

mechanisms for nursing homes to try and address this in the long-term…”

This response will horrify the aged care sector, which is pleading with the Howard

Government to take immediate action. The aged care Pricing Review, referred to by

Minister Patterson, will not be reporting until at least the end of this year.

The Minister for Ageing should put to rest the aged care sector’s fears, by giving an

undertaking that the Government will act immediately on release of the Pricing

Review later this year.

The aged care sector is desperate, and solutions are needed now - not in the long-term!

Prime Minister Howard should hang his head in shame for allowing the frail and

elderly residents of nursing homes to be treated in this appalling manner.
