Mr Michael Organ MP

Education Minister Brendan Nelson is in denial over student debt Cunningham MP Michael Organ said this morning.

"The Minister is happy to keep carping over the opposition's failure to ask him questions about apprenticeships, but when it comes to DEBT, student debt - and ever increasing student debt, the Minister is silent", Mr. Organ said.

"I heard the Minister on the radio this morning talk about how any eligible Australian student can walk into any Australian university and not have to pay a cent in upfront fees."

"But he didn't tell us that they would nevertheless have to pay some of the highest university fees in the world, and that they would be lumbered with debts ranging from $30,000 to over $100,000."

"He didn't say that this debt burden is forcing students to drop out of university thanks to the overnight cave-in of the four independent Senators."

"If the Minister was honest with the Australian people about the debt burden, if he listened to students around the country who are living in poverty, working 2,3,4 jobs just to survive, and all the while having to study, he would not be allowing the universities to increase fees by up to 25%", Mr. Organ said.
