M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 25th June 2008 $122.9 MILLION FOR RAAF BASE TINDAL Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon today welcomed a major redevelopment and investment in RAAF Base Tindal near Katherine. “RAAF Base Tindal is critical to Australia’s air defence, fleet support and joint operations,” said Mr Snowdon. “The Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Public works has recommended a $58.7 million proposal in redevelopment and refurbishment of RAAF Base Tindal, and this recommendation has been approved by Parliament. “The redevelopment will ensure the RAAF Base Tindal can meet the demands made of it. “It includes upgrades to the Base engineering services, aircraft maintenance facilities, warehousing, new fuel tanker maintenance and liquid dry breathing oxygen facilities as well as catering and messing improvements. “This Government is fully committed to providing the ADF in the Northern Territory with the best facilities possible,” said Mr Snowdon. Construction is planned to commence in mid 2009 and be completed in mid 2011. “In addition, RAAF Base Tindal is being upgraded to become the forward operating base for the new Airborne Early Warning and Control ‘Wedgetail’ aircraft. “Built around the new generation Boeing 737, the ‘Wedgetail’ will be equipped with communications technology, sensors and radar, and will provide the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with an enhanced surveillance capability in the broad expanse of the Top End. “As a result, the Parliament has approved a $64.2 million proposal to construct new taxiways, aprons, shelters, and refuelling infrastructure at RAAF Base Tindal to enable the aircraft to operate effectively from the base,” said Mr Snowdon. Construction is planned to commence in early 2009 and be completed in late 2010. Media Contact: Kate Sieper 0488 484 689
