Coalition to fight WTO New Zealand Apple decision

As expected, the World Trade Organisation report on fresh New Zealand apple imports has ruled that the ban which originally stopped New Zealand apples into Australia be lifted.

Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, said the Coalition, whether in or out of Government will fight the decision which could destroy Australia’s disease free status.

“The World Trade Organisation’s decision to lift the ban could potentially risk Murray’s apple and pear industry which presently produces more than 80 percent of Australia’s pears.”

“Our community has stood shoulder to shoulder to try and combat the threat of importing fresh New Zealand apple and pears for decades.

“It is vitally important that the Rudd Labor Government appeal this decision and prosecute a successful case to the WTO before it is too late.

“This means the Government must turn away its usual habit of simply ticking a box and not listening to the industries that this ruling will affect.

“The Coalition will be urging the Labor Government to appeal this decision, and if elected to Government, will continue to fight to protect Australia’s industries from disease,” Sharman Stone said.
