Wed, 23rd January 2008 RUDD SHOULD KEEP HIS RAZORS AWAY FROM NATIONAL SECURITY

The Hon Christopher Pyne MP Shadow Minister for Justice & Border Protection Shadow Minister Assisting the Shadow Minister for Immigration & Citizenship

Any budget cuts by Kevin Rudd's Razor Gang should not come at the expense of Australia's national security, Shadow Minister for Justice and Border Protection Christopher Pyne said today.

''National security is far too important to be compromised by a reduction in resources. The revelation that the role of Air Security Officers is to be scaled back would be to the detriment of the safety of air passengers'', Mr Pyne said.

''Passengers on aircraft need to know that they are safe and protected from the threat of terrorism. Compromising the role of Air Security Officers on flights puts that in jeopardy.

''Since the events of September 11, the role of the Australian Federal Police, particularly in counter-terrorism, has been substantially expanded with more personnel and resources. The AFP should be given the resources they need to conduct their counter-terrorism role effectively.

''Budget cuts in national security are the last place that Labor should be looking to make savings.''
