The Rudd Government will deliver more than $11 million in a down payment to the Territory’s aged and disability support pensioners, carers, seniors and veterans said Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP today.

“This payment provides real and direct financial help to Territorians in the nine months leading up to comprehensive reform of the pension system,” said Mr Snowdon.

Pension recipients, carers and seniors will receive a lump sum payment of $1,400 to singles and $2,100 to couples, to be paid from 8 December.

Self-funded retirees, who are eligible for a Seniors Concession Allowance or hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card will receive similar lump sum payments to pensioners in recognition of the tough economic circumstances they currently face.

People who are receiving a Carer Allowance will also receive $1,000 for each eligible person they care for.

“Across the NT we have more than a 1,000 people on the aged pension partnered, more than 2,000 on the single aged pension, more than 1,000 on the disability support pension partnered and almost 3,000 on the single disability support.

“This financial relief is vitally needed and won’t leave any pensioners out.

“We’re not pitting people against each other, or excluding carers, people with a disability and married pensioners.

“And the payment is a down payment ahead of longer term reform.

“There’s no doubt that this money will make a big difference to the more than 9,000 recipients in Lingiari,” said Mr Snowdon.
