TOURISM INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT ADDRESS FUTURE CHALLENGES

The tourism industry and the Australian Government are working together to plan for the future.

Speaking at the launch of the National Tourism Alliance's (NTA) research paper Tourism in Australia: Future Directions 2009 - 2014 the Minister for Tourism, the Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP congratulated the efforts of the NTA in formulating its ideas for the future direction of tourism policy.

The Minister said "The NTA’s research paper is a valuable contribution to the policy development process for the Government’s National Long-Term Tourism Strategy.

"We live in challenging times for the tourism industry with record high oil prices and a high dollar affecting both domestic and international tourism.

“On top of that, the crisis in global financial markets has created an environment of uncertainty that is not helpful for the tourism industry.

"These are exceptional circumstances and the industry needs to be innovative in marketing and responsive on the supply side to the changing demands of tourists to provide for its long-term sustainability.

"It is encouraging to see that many of the themes covered in the NTA paper alig

n with the themes

that have been identified for the development of the National Long-Term Tourism Strategy.

“These include building and retaining a productive tourism workforce, delivering quality tourism products and services which meet the needs of a dynamic market, and encouraging and facilitating the tourism investment and infrastructure the industry needs.

The Strategy, to be completed in mid 2009, is being developed in close

consultation with the tourism

industry and all levels of government.

"What we need to do is establish a framework to facilitate investment in quality tourism products, infrastructure, skills and services to underpin a long-term sustainable future for a vibrant Australian tourism industry.”
