Kelly announces funding for Cooma Youth Centre

The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Dr Mike Kelly has today visited the Cooma Youth Centre to announce that the Rudd Labor Government was able to secure Commonwealth Government funding of $48,611 in 2007-08 to upgrade the Youth Centre.

Dr Kelly said this project is vital to ensure the Cooma Youth Centre is able to continue to provide support and services the youth of the town. Dr Kelly will meet with youth workers, volunteers and local youth that make the facility possible.

Dr Kelly said;

“Since its inception the Youth Centre has provided support and services for the local youth who were prone to isolation and service disadvantage. There are also a number of reports saying that this centre has led to decreases in crime in Cooma

“I am glad I have been able to secure the funding for this project and I look forward to working with the great staff at the Cooma Youth Centre into the future.

“The funding will be used to upgrade the Cooma Youth Centre and improve the building’s safety, provide for outdoor activities and heating.

“A number of other groups such as the Council, the YMCA, Rotary and the Assembly of God have also provided significant funding towards this project.

“This was a project I had to fight very hard to save from the wreckage of the discredited and disgraceful Regional Partnerships program. There were countless unfunded promises made during the last election through a process that was slammed in a 1200 page National Audit Office report into the politically driven program.

“The Youth Centre project was too important to let fall victim to the mismanagement of the Howard Government.

“I would like to pay a special tribute to the tireless work the great staff at the youth centre, in particular Hayley Redhead who is an amazing asset for the Cooma community.

“I will continue to do everything I can to support the team at the youth centre “, said Dr Kelly.
