Tasmanian Logging Farce: Call for Federal Intervention

6th March 2005

A 'go-ahead' for logging at South Sisters on Tasmania's east coast, despite a judicial ruling that the local community had a ‘prima facie’ case that logging will cause environmental harm, is farcical and should trigger federal intervention, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

“The Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement, signed by Prime Minister Howard in 1997, is predicated on environmental guarantees. Here the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal has ruled that there is a prima facie case against the logging which is due to start

tomorrow”, Senator Brown said.

“I have called on the Minister for the Environment, Ian Campbell, to order a halt till the environmental concerns are resolved.

“A final hearing of the residents' concerns has been set down for 6-8 June. There are alternative woodchipping sites.

“Commonsense should prevail and the logging should be diverted until the case is heard”, Senator Brown said.
