Agriculture and forestry consulted on Australia's future carbon trading scheme 5 August 2008 DAFF08/097B

Regional forums to discuss agriculture and forestry’s place in Australia’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme are being held nationally.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the Rudd Government’s Green Paper, released on 16 July 2008, pointed to 2015 as a possible date for agriculture’s inclusion in the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

“While the final decisions on whether agriculture will be included will not be made until 2013, the paper indicates that forestry may be able to opt in to the carbon trading scheme when it starts,” Mr Burke said.

“There are many measurement issues we need to address before we include agriculture and we want to hear what farmers and their industry organisations have to say about resolving those issues.

“The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry consultations will focus solely on the aspects of the Green Paper that relate to agriculture and forestry. I encourage those working in agriculture or forestry industries to attend these regional forums and contribute to the Government’s decision-making process.”

Regional consultations have taken place in Griffith and Albury in New South Wales and Northam in Western Australia.

Further consultations are planned for the following centres:

• 5 August, Margaret River (WA), Council Chambers, 12.30pm-2pm

• 11 August, Mildura (VIC), Alfred Deakin Centre, 10.30am-noon

• 12 August, Mt Gambier (SA), City Hall, 1.30pm-3pm

• 13 August, Cleve (SA), Town Hall, 10.30am-noon
