***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 15 July 2004

Health Minister Tony Abbott must ensure that any new magnetic resonance imaging machine licence in the Illawarra health region is granted to Wollongong’s public hospital rather than a private facility, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

“I am gravely concerned that Gilmore MP Joanna Gash seems to be favouring the grant of an MRI Medicare licence for a private facility in Nowra ahead of the demonstrated need for the facility which is already in place at Wollongong Hospital”, Mr. Organ said.

“I have raised the issue of Wollongong Hospital’s MRI machine in parliament on five occasions, and I’ve written to Mr. Abbott urging him to respond to the needs of the public health system in the Illawarra.”

“Any move to licence a private facility in Nowra ahead of the region’s major public hospital would be election pork-barreling of the worst order.”

“I know that the Illawarra Area Health Service is geared up to respond to the Health Minister’s Invitation to Apply for one of the twenty new licences on offer, and I urge him to put the needs of the public health system ahead of private sector profit”, Mr. Organ said.
