Media Release Hon Arch Bevis MP Federal Member for Brisbane Shadow Minister for Defence Planning, Procurement and Personnel Assisting the Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations

Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel Arch Bevis welcomed the announcement that the complaint handling process for Australian Defence Force members will be improved.

Mr Bevis said: “Concerns about problems in the military complaint/redress system have been raised by Labor for years. The Defence announcement of an overhaul of the process is therefore welcomed by Labor.

“However, the devil is in the detail. Consequently I have sought a briefing from the Defence Minister on the new processes for the speedier handling of complaints.

“I am aware of cases where redresses of grievance have taken several years and have affected the promotional opportunities, seniority and morale of ADF members. My office is currently handling a complaint from an ADF member whose redress of grievance has so far taken three years.”

Mr Bevis added: “Justice delayed is justice denied. I hope the details of the new system will produce speedier and fair outcomes.”
