MEDIA RELEASE The Hon. Bruce Billson, MP Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence 006/06 Sunday, 26 February 2006 ADF KIDS KICK GOALS WITH THE KANGAROOS Canberra region children of deployed Australian Defence Force members have been treated to a great day with the Kangaroos Football Club, the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Bruce Billson, said today at the AFL Community Camp ‘Auskick Clinic’ at Manuka Oval. “It is critically important that families of deployed ADF members remain engaged with their local community and today’s event at Manuka Oval has been a fantastic occasion for families to get together to share their experiences and for children to meet with their favourite footy players,” Mr Billson said. “We must all remember that when ADF members deploy on operations, their families continue everyday life back in Australia which includes maintaining a household, working, going to school and even playing sport. “Defence Force families make a lot of sacrifices and Australians should acknowledge the terrific jobs they do while their spouses and partners are deployed serving their country and protecting our national interests,” Mr Billson said. “The support given by the AFL, the Kangaroos players and the efforts of the Defence Community Organisation have made today a fun and important experience for all involved . “During the day’s activities, ADF families and children enjoyed a BBQ and private meeting with the Kangaroos team. The children each received a souvenir football, autographed books and photos with their favourite players. “The Australian Government, through Defence, is committed to supporting ADF families and provides a number of family programs and support services to ensure that ADF members can deploy, confident that their families are being looked after while they are away,” Mr Billson said.
