Work For The Dole Working To Rebuilding Kambah Lions Haven

Employment Services Minister Mal Brough announced today that Work for the Dole has responded to the urgent need for assistance following the Canberra bushfires.

"The establishment of Bushmakers, the first Community Action Group in the ACT, is playing a valuable role in helping to clean up an important part of Canberra." Mr Brough said.

Through a Community Action Group, Work for the Dole participants can volunteer to provide short-term, emergency assistance to appropriate authorities such as SES and local councils, during or after natural disasters such as floods, storms or bushfires.

"Bushmakers was already working at the Lions Youth Haven Kambah site on a Work for the Dole activity involving the regeneration of native plant species, landscaping and the creation of a community garden. The Lions Youth Haven provides assistance to young people in the community in the areas of education and accommodation.

"The Lions Youth Haven lost stables, sheds, pumping stations, fences and other infrastructure at the height of the Canberra blaze," Mr Brough said.

"Participants in the Bushmakers Community Action Group are now focusing, in the short term, on rebuilding and repairing fencing and clearing the site from damage caused by the bushfires so that the area can be reused and rebuilding can commence."

Mr Brough said this clean-up work would allow Lions Youth Haven to continue to serve the local community. Once this is completed participants will be able to return to activities involving landscaping and the creation of a native garden.

Mr Brough commended Bushmakers and the Community Work Coordinator, Mission Australia for their fast response to the needs of the Canberra Community.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations contracts Community Work Coordinators (CWC) to organise and administer activities for Work for the Dole.
