LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON. DR BRENDAN NELSON MP

VISIT TO THE UNITED KINGDOM AND UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

I will be making a working visit to the United Kingdom and United States of America from 5 August to 15 August.

The purpose of the visit is to hold high-level talks with senior US and UK officials and discussions in both nations will focus on global economic uncertainty, international security challenges and our response to climate change.

During my visit to London, I will meet with senior officials from the Bank of England, senior banking executives as well as corporate leaders to discuss global financial matters and the ongoing fallout from the US credit crisis.

In addition, I am particularly keen to hear from resource companies and other corporates with a multi-national footprint regarding their experience of the European Union’s emissions trading scheme.

I will also take the opportunity to meet with key figures within the British Government and the Conservative Party.

In New York, I will hold discussions with key representatives from both US and global financial markets and institutions as well as several business leaders with links to Australia. In addition, I also look forward to an update from the United Nations on global climate change initiatives.

In Washington DC, I will hold discussions with the IMF and build on relationships developed in my time as Minister for Defence. Ahead of the US presidential election in November, I will also meet with leading Democrats and Republicans.

The Hon Julie Bishop MP will be acting Leader of the Opposition for the duration of my visit.
