SENATOR KERRY O’BRIEN SHADOW MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT

1 March 2006

TIME FOR TRUSS TO REVEAL HIS TAKE ON TRUCK FUEL TOLL

Federal Labor calls on Transport Minister Warren Truss to reveal whether he supports the National Transport Commission-recommended Third Price Determination which would result in a 2.1 cents per litre increase in the road user fuel charge for heavy vehicles.

If the recommendation is accepted the Howard Government’s revenue from the road user fuel charge would rise from $1.095 billion to $1.210 billion - a windfall of $115 million per year (see below).

This rise would have an obvious impact on the trucking industry and road transport dependant industries and communities.

Today Federal Labor calls on Mr Truss to reveal whether he supports higher road user fuel charges for the trucking industry.

If Mr Truss does support higher charges, will he ensure the additional Commonwealth revenue is directed to road funding or other programs that would improve the efficiency of the trucking industry?

Mr Truss has maintained a curious silence on this issue despite it being in the public domain for the past year.

It’s time for Mr Truss to emerge from the bunker and reveal his position to the Parliament and the road transport sector.
