Hartsuyker calls on Clarence council candidates to publicly oppose sale of Maclean Hospital land

The Nationals’ Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, has called on all candidates at the upcoming Clarence Valley local government elections to publicly oppose the sale of any land from Maclean Hospital.

The North Coast Area Health Service is currently calling for tenders for the purchase of part of the Maclean Hospital site.

Mr Hartsuyker said candidates elected at this week’s council poll should send a clear message to any developer considering purchasing the site.

“It is important that all candidates make any potential developer aware what the position of the next council will be.

“By publicly declaring they oppose any development of the site, they will be sending a message to any purchaser that they will be dealing with a council that won’t be party to any development of the land. That means council would not support any rezoning of the land.

“I understand the State Government can bypass the council and apply directly to the Department of Planning for a rezoning of the hospital land.

“But the council will still need to be involved in any consideration of a development application or the construction of a new development.

“Therefore the new council will still have an important role to play in the future use of the land and any potential purchaser would know they may be facing a hostile council.

“That is why I am calling on all council candidates to publicly declare their opposition to the sale and the development of the Maclean Hospital land.”
