Labour Force August 2008

Labour force figures released today by the ABS show that despite the global economic slowdown, employment

in Australia remains strong.

This month’s jobs figures exceeded market expectations, with seasonally adjusted employment increasing by

14 600 to stand at 10 744 300, reflecting the underlying resilience of the Australian labour market.

Full-time employment rose by 7 500 in August, following on from last month’s strong increase of 55 600, to

currently stand at its highest level on record of 7 729 700. Part-time employment also rose in August, by 7

200.

237 100 jobs have now been created over the past year, more than 82 per cent of which have been full-time

positions. Over the past three months almost 55,000 jobs have been created.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate also declined in August, to 4.1 per cent, although this occurred in

conjunction with a small decrease in the labour force participation rate, of 0.1 percentage points.

The Rudd Government welcomes more Australians being in work than ever before, particularly in the context

of such a challenging global economic environment.

Forward indicators suggest that labour market activity will soften in the period ahead.

The Rudd Government is committed to combining relief for families with a strong surplus and nation building

for the future to respond to the global challenges.

The Government is committed to getting the underlying fundamentals right and tackling the problems

neglected by the previous Liberal government so we can create ongoing, sustainable employment well into the

future.
