THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari

23rd October 2008

TIWI COUNCIL WINS AT LANDCARE AWARDS The Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, today congratulated the Tiwi Land Council for its win at the prestigious National Landcare Awards held this evening in Canberra.

“This is yet another terrific accomplishment for the Tiwi Land Council.” said Mr Snowdon.

“The Tiwi Land Council has already received accolades for its land care practices; this award is ongoing recognition of the success that the Council has enjoyed in developing sustainable industries.”

In managing its natural resources, the Tiwi Island faces the challenge of balancing principles of sustainable development with maintaining Tiwi culture, with the aim of supporting the permanent residents of the island.

The Land Council took out the “Caring for country” category for its two sustainable community enterprises: independent plantation forestry and sea cage aquaculture.

Held every two years, the National Landcare Awards is the premier event recognising environmental achievement by Australians.

The award was received in front of a packed audience in the Great Hall of Parliament House.

Territory was well represented at the Awards, with a number of other groups and individuals nominated, including: The Borroloola Community Education Centre; Roper River Landcare Group; North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) and Charles Darwin University; Ted Johansen; and the National Trust Landcare Group.

The number of nominations is a testament to the positive and innovative land practices being developed in the Territory.

Congratulations to all Territory finalists.
