M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 14th August 2008   OVER $3.1 MILLION FOR TERRITORY INDIGENOUS ARTS Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, today welcomed more than $3.1 million ($3,142,615) in support of the Territory’s Indigenous Art Centres. “It is wonderful to see the Northern Territory’s Indigenous visual arts receiving such a significant part of the Rudd Government’s $8 million 2008-09 National Arts and Crafts Industry Support program (NACIS) commitment,” said Mr Snowdon. “Indigenous arts are an important enterprise in the Territory’s remote communities, and a vital source of economic, social and cultural development. “The NACIS support will be used to help pay salaries at the newly established Ali Curung art centre, through to assisting established centres such as Maningrida Arts and Culture Centre continue its work. “Whether it’s Melville Island, Ramingining, Gunbalanya or Haasts Bluff, the art centres feature as a hub of community life, and are a place where men and women can nurture, explore and express their culture. “The centres allow artists to develop their skills, help promote and market their work, and ensure they are properly paid.” The National Arts and Craft Industry Support program aims to build a more sustainable Indigenous visual arts industry through investment in Indigenous art centres and arts support organisations. The program plays a direct role in supporting professional art practice, community art activities, business management and governance, and employment and training at the community level. The National Arts and Craft Industry Support program 2008-09 funding is part of the Australian Government’s whole-of-government Indigenous funding round. Full details on the projects funded and on the National Arts and Culture Industry Support program are available at: www.arts.gov.au/indig.
