Mon, 18th February 2008 'EFFICIENCY DIVIDEND' - LABOR'S NATIONAL SECURITY CUTS EXPOSED

The Hon Christopher Pyne MP Shadow Minister for Justice & Border Protection Shadow Minister Assisting the Shadow Minister for Immigration & Citizenship

Today's Senate Estimates has highlighted Labor's dangerous ambiguity towards national security budget cuts, Opposition Spokesman on Justice and Border Protection Christopher Pyne said today.

''In today's Senate Estimates, Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty was unable to guarantee the Sky Marshals program would not be cut back'', Mr Pyne said.

''Commissioner Keelty went on to confirm the Federal Police will need to make cuts to meet required efficiency dividends.

''This is inconsistent with Senator Ludwig's responses, who avoided directly answering the question.''

''The Labor Government has consistently refused to come clean on whether or not they plan to cut national security funding in the May Budget.

''Commissioner Keelty's reference to the 'efficiency dividend' needs clarification.

''The message coming from estimates today is clear: Labor is prepared to put Australia's National Security at risk, in the name of false efficiency.''
