Howard’s power grab an insult to Territorians

The out of touch Howard Government has again shown its true colours, ignoring the wishes of Territorians to be represented by the Northern Territory Government.

Territorians have the right to be angry that key decisions on the future of mining in the Territory will now be made from Canberra, rather than Darwin.

The Howard Government is blatantly abusing its power by overriding the wishes of Territorians and the Government they elected in a landslide just three months ago.

This unwarranted federal interference effectively renders the citizens of Northern Territory as second class citizens who have no say in how their Territory is governed.

The Howard Governments plans to abandon cooperative federalism altogether - the Northern Territory will have new uranium mines if and when the Federal Government wishes.

The wishes of the people of the Northern Territory play no role in this decision.

Labor believes that the powers claimed by the Federal Government should not be used to override the express wishes of the people of the Northern Territory.

Clare Martin’s Government and the people of the Northern Territory must determine the Territory’s future, not the out of touch Howard Government and Canberra bureaucrats.

To do so effectively denies Territorians the democratic rights enjoyed by all other Australians and undermines the spirit of the Self Government Act.

The Howard Government must recognise that the people of the Northern Territory recently voted overwhelmingly to return Clare Martin’s Government and that this Canberra power-grab ignores the wishes of Territorians.
