Inquiry into the Management and Integrity of Electronic Information in the Commonwealth

Parliament's Public Accounts and Audit Committee has tabled Report 399: Inquiry into the Management and Integrity of Electronic Information in the Commonwealth.

Public Accounts and Audit Committee Chairman, Mr Bob Charles MP, said “The report reflects the Committee’s grave concern at cases of the inadequate management of electronic information in the Commonwealth. Of particular concern was the failure of some Commonwealth agencies to ensure the physical security of equipment on which information was stored.”

“The Committee also found that some agencies had unsatisfactory recording, reporting and recovery rates of stolen and lost equipment.”

He added that “Commonwealth agencies must always be mindful that they hold information belonging to Australian citizens on trust. It is incumbent that they fulfil their duty of care in a way that maintains public confidence.”

The Committee believes that greater efforts need to be made to ensure a whole of government approach in three broad areas:

• the achievement of satisfactory levels of physical security for equipment used to store electronic data; • the development and implementation of practicable standards for the protection of electronic information against access by unauthorised

persons or for unauthorised purposes; and • the implementation of adequate data storage practices to make certain on-going access to data in the face of rapidly changing technology.
