BUDGET FUNDING BOOST FOR RED CROSS

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has received a major boost in the 2009-10 Budget, with Rudd Government funding to build a new principal blood manufacturing facility in Melbourne.

The Australian Government will contribute $120 million over two years towards a purpose-built facility to ensure the continuation of safe, efficient and effective delivery of the nation’s blood supply.

The project is supported under the Government’s nation-building Health and Hospitals Fund, which is building health infrastructure for the 21st century, while also creating employment opportunities.

The project will have both local and national benefits. People living in Victoria and Tasmania will directly benefit, with the facility being their principal site for fresh blood supplies. There will also be a national benefit, as 25 per cent of Australia’s total fresh blood is currently processed at the Victorian site.

There will also be jobs benefits - it is expected the project will employ up to 150 people at its peak, as well as jobs for the local building industry during construction.

Construction is due to begin in 2009 and be completed by April 2011.
