Michael Organ MP

Greens Member for Cunningham

***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 9 March 2004

The Greens’ opposition to the full sale of Telstra is just as strong as it was when the government first introduced its Telstra (Transition to Full Private Ownership) Bill last year, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

“Telstra must stay in public ownership in the interests of all Australians” Mr. Organ said.

“Telstra needs more staff and more investment to ensure that all Australians have access to basic telecommunication services. A profit-driven private company won’t do that.”

“If Telstra is fully privatised and shareholder profit becomes its sole objective it is precisely those basic services which will be neglected.”

“Public ownership of national telecommunications carriers is not unusual. Germany, Japan, France, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Holland and Korea, to name a few, all have significant shares in their national telecommunications carriers.”

“To argue that the sale of Telstra is somehow inevitable progress is absurd”, Mr. Organ said.
