www.youthweek.com: make it yours

13/12/2004

National Youth Week, now in its sixth year, is Australia's largest annual celebration of young people, involving thousands of events, concerts, competitions and fun ways for young people to be involved in their communities.

Parliamentary Secretary for Children and Youth Affairs, Sussan Ley, today encouraged young Australians to log on to www.youthweek.com, and get involved in Australia's biggest youth celebration, National Youth Week 2005.

"The national website will be a central point of information, covering all the activities and events held around Australia between 9-17 April 2005, as part of the celebrations of National Youth Week 2005," Mrs Ley said.

"As well as all the information they need to get involved, the website offers many ways for young people from around Australia to participate in their week, win free prizes, enter talent competitions and make their voices heard.

"The theme for National Youth Week 2005 is make it yours, selected in consultation with young people from around Australia, and is a call to action to get involved, as well as a reminder to the wider community to recognise the value of young people."

As well as officially launching the National Youth Week website, Mrs Ley also announced five National Talent Competitions, which will help to unearth some of Australia's youngest and most dynamic writers, musicians, film-makers, designers and photographers.

"Young Australians aged between 12 and 25 can enter the five National Talent Competitions - WriteIT, RockIT, ShootIT, DesignIT and SnapIT, with the winners receiving some fantastic prizes and unique opportunities at relevant work experience in their chosen industry.

"Last year, almost 900 young people entered the national talent competitions through the website, over 12 000 entered the Win Free Stuff web competitions, and the website attracted over 140 000 unique visitors," Mrs Ley said.

National Youth Week 2005 is a joint Australian Government, State, Territory and Local Government initiative.
