AIR FORCE CADETS FORM NEW ILLAWARRA SQUADRON

The Hon Fran Bailey, Defence Parliamentary Secretary announced today approval has been given by the Royal Australian Air Force to raise a trial Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) unit (Squadron) in the Southern Illawarra region.

Ms Bailey said, "The Government is committed to enhancing the cadet movement, and to providing opportunities to young Australians for personal development, enhanced self-esteem, self discipline and a spirit of adventure. Involvement in cadets provides opportunities and experiences for young people to develop new skills both as individuals and as part of a team in a military environment.

By working together, local communities, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Government continue to create unique opportunities for young Australians through the Cadet programs, the leadership and support of the Cadet Services is very much a partnership between local communities, the ADF and Government."

The trial unit, to be known as No.338 (Illawarra) Squadron AAFC, is to be raised on a trial basis. During the first year of operation, the unit will parade at the Warilla RSL Sub-branch hall, with the first parade to be held on Thursday, 6 February at 7pm.

The strong support of the Shellharbour City Council and representatives of RSL sub-branches in the area was an important factor in gaining approval to raise the trial Squadron.

Shellharbour City Council has recognised the need to provide employment-related training and opportunities to the youth of the Southern Illawarra area. The raising of No.338 Squadron AAFC fits within this recognised need.

The Commonwealth Government provides $30 million in support of the ADF Cadets. This includes the Cadet Enhancement Program which supports the development, testing and implementation of initiatives to ensure that ADF Cadets remains a meaningful, positive and relevant experience for young Australians.

ADF Cadets have been revitalised as a result of Government's response to the 'Cadets: the Future' review; the Government is committed to enhancing the cadet movement, and to providing opportunities for young Australians for personal development, enhanced self-esteem, self discipline and a spirit of adventure.
