MEDIA RELEASE

LINDSAY TANNER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

MINISTER’S LUXURY PLASMA TV COURTESY OF TELSTRA

Senator Alston admitted in Senate Estimates today that he has a Plasma Digital television set on loan courtesy of Telstra.

These luxury digital television sets are estimated to cost up to $10,000.

Having provided its chief executive, Dr Ziggy Switkowski, with a mobile phone receiving dish to cope with the undulating hills of Toorak, Telstra have now provided its Minister with a luxury television set for his home.

With the Howard Government it’s one rule for the rich and famous and another rule for everybody else. All most Australians got from Telstra last year was higher home phone line rental costs.

Senator Alston says he needs the luxury plasma digital television set to make digital television policy. One thing is for sure—he is one of the few people watching such a set. Most Australians can’t afford them.

Senator Alston’s digital television policy is a complete disaster but he gets to watch top quality digital TV for nothing. He thinks his job is to get great TV service for himself, not all Australian viewers. He should give the TV set back immediately, apologise to the Australian people, and fix his digital disaster.
