The Happening Families program run by Berry Street Victoria in Morwell has received a boost with the announcement of a one year extension to program funding.

The Federal Government will provide $105,000 in funding for the program which targets young parents and provides support and education in the area of child development.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the Happening Families program was an exceptional service provided to the Latrobe Valley community by Berry Street Victoria.

“The Latrobe Valley has been well served by the Happening Families program and that support will continue over the course of next financial year,” Mr Chester said.

“The program uses weekly structured support programs to assist young parents in developing effective parenting skills and becoming more community orientated.”

Mr Chester highlighted the need for education and support to be provided to young parents in regional communities such as the Latrobe Valley.

“Supporting young parents and providing them with the appropriate pathways for further assistance is important when young people become parents for the first time,” Mr Chester said.

“By focusing on child development and improving parenting skills, the program helps to eliminate some of the factors which result in young parents becoming disengaged from their local community.”
