The Minister for the Interior, Mr Peter Nixon, announced today,that the Government had made available an

additional $600,000 to assist in repairing flood damage to the Stuart and Barfly Highways. The additional funds would bring the planned total expenditure in 1968/69 on the highways to $2.4 rn.

Reconstruction work would commence shortly on the following sections of the Stuart Highway:-

• Cabbage Gum Bore to 538 mile (17 miles) • 14 miles in the Wycliffe Well area between Wauchope and Barro%, , Creels • 7 miles between Barrow Creek and

ii Tree.

Mr Nixon said there had been severe deterioration to some sections of the highways following the record rains of the last two wet seasons.

This was the second year in succession that additional funds had been made available for flood repair. In 1967/68 expenditure on the highways was increased by $500,000 to $2 million.
