$10 BILLION INVESTMENT IN UNIVERSITIES OVER 1995 AND 1996
The Federal Government will provide more than $10 billion for higher education in 1995
and 1996 reflecting the Government's continuing commitment to quality, diversity and
equity of access in the higher education system, the Minister for Employment, Education
and Training, Simon Crean, said today.
Details of the funding allocations are set out in the Minister's Supplementary Higher
Education Funding Report for the 1994-96 Trienniwn released today.
The report provides details of 1995 funding allocations for research activities, National
Priority (Reserve) Fund and National Teaching Development Grants activities, variations to
institutions' operating grants for 1995 and 1996, the additional 500 undergraduate places
for Queensland in 1995 and allocations totalling $35.9 million from the Capital
Development Pool for projects in 1997.
Mr Crean said that higher education funding decisions for 1997 and 1998 will be considered -in the May 1995 Budget
"This will bring higher education funding into line with the new Budget cycle and in future
years provide institutions with an extended timetable for future planning, " he said
"Holding over 1997 funding decisions until the 1995 Budget will also allow further
consideration of issues such as higher education resource allocation and fee-paying
arrangements for postgraduate courses.
"Allocations from the Capital Development Pool for 1997 are being made now, however,
because of the long lead time involved in major projects," Mr Crean said.
