New Mobile Phone System for Christmas Island

The Australian Government will provide $2.5 million to construct a new mobile phone network for Christmas Island, the Minister for Finance and Administration, Senator Nick Minchin, and the Acting Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Senator Ian Campbell, announced today.

Senator Campbell said the replacement project would cost around $3.3m and would be funded in partnership with Telstra.

“The project will replace the existing outdated system, which is likely to be decommissioned towards the end of the year,” Senator Campbell said. “

The funding will see the Christmas Island community retain a vital modern telecommunications link to the world.

“For the economy to expand and business to prosper, speedy and efficient communication is essential. This new network will provide that.”

Senator Minchin, visiting Christmas Island to announce the letting of an early works package for the construction of the Immigration Reception and Processing Centre, said the funding, from the Australian Government’s Regional Partnership Programme, was a further sign of the Government’s commitment to regional and remote areas of Australia.

“This funding is in addition to the money already committed by the Government to the construction of the Immigration Reception and Processing Centre, which itself will generate significant economic activity for the Island,” he said.
